About SCAF

The Somali Coalition Against FGM (SCAF)  is a grassroots organization that emerged from the women’s rights movement. It is dedicated to advocating for the rights of Somali women, with a specific and targeted mission.

Established in 2008, SCAF constitutes a diverse and inclusive feminist network advocating for women’s rights. It holds a distinctive position as a civil society organization on a regional level in politically volatile areas. SCAF is operational across a spectrum of cultural, political, and geographical terrains within Somalia.

In Somalia, women are frequently perceived as targets, however, SCAF challenges this perception by highlighting the oppressive nature of cultural norms towards women. SCAF advocates for the collective strength and potential of Somali women to instigate change. Contrary to prevailing stereotypes, Somalia thrives based on the commitment of African women’s rights activists. The endeavour for women’s rights in the Greater Horn of Africa is regarded as a political struggle, centered on essential political reform.

Our women-led Somali network, spanning across Somalia, showcases how diverse ethnic, religious, and tribal backgrounds do not hinder collaboration among women. We are grateful for the widespread appreciation, support, and care from both women and men across these nations.
